hopscotch!

with 3 comments

A young boy waits for a neighbor to attatch a basket of bread to a rope he dangles from his second story balcony. This is a common tradition in Turkey.

I hopscotched with several local girls as their mothers watch, amused, from a second-story window.

A woman turns away, tears in her eyes, as she watches a man flogging himself to the point of blood.

The man practices asceticism–reenacting the flogging of Christ, during the festival of Kidane Meheret. Tens of thousands Ethiopian Orthodox  gathered for the festival. Kidane Meheret, which means Covenant of Mercy, is an Orthodox festival honoring the Virgin Mary.
